Exploring new techniques not only adds variety to the learning process but also prevents students from becoming bored with a repetitive routine. The Madinah Quran Memorization Method is a systematic approach to memorizing the Quran, inspired by traditional Islamic education practices in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. This method, recognized as one of the effective Quran memorization techniques, involves students revising the verse they have learned several times in one sitting to ensure not a single error is left behind. They revise the memorized portion in three slots throughout the day, ensuring to consolidate them together for fluency.
What is the Madinah Memorization Method?
The method from Madinah, also known as the Takrar method, involves repeating the memorized portions as many times as possible to fully commit them to memory. This method is a systematic practice that is carried out through regular revision, order, and a set of practices. This technique has three pillars that need to be consolidated for best results. These pillars are:
- New hifz lesson
- Mastering the lesson
- Reviewing the lesson
When you start memorizing, for example, a page, you can use audio or visual aids to help you learn it. Once you think you have perfected it, record your lesson. Then, listen to the audio and check if your pronunciation (Tajweed) needs improvement, your flow, your fluency, etc. This is your mastering stage. After mastering, review the lesson 20 times to achieve a higher level of perfection. The method is particularly effective in hifz classes for kids, where structured guidance and repetition are key to successful Quran memorization.
How Does this Method Work?
Here is the detail of how you will deal with the 3 pillars of the Madinah memorization method. We will take the example of Surah Ash-Shams from Juz 30th which has 15 verses and they are really short in size.
- Read the first verse 20 times
- Read the second verse 20 times
- Read the third verse 20 times
- Read the fourth verse 20 times
Read verses 1-4 from the beginning to the end, to link them, 20 times.
- Read the fifth verse 20 times
- Read the sixth verse 20 times
- Read the seventh verse 20 times
- Read the eighth verse 20 times
Read from the fifth verse to the eighth verse 20 times to consolidate between them. Then, read from the first verse to the eighth verse 20 times to perfect this page.
- Read the ninth verse 20 times
- Read the tenth verse 20 times
- Read the eleventh verse 20 times
- Read the twelfth verse 20 times
Read from 9-12 twenty times for consolidation. Then, read from verses 1 to 12 twenty times.
- Read the thirteenth verse 20 times
- Read the fourteenth verse 20 times
- Read the last verse number 15 twenty times.
Now, read from 13-15 verse 20 times and then from 1st till 15th another 20 times. This process involves all three pillars, and in the end, you will have memorized the Surah exceptionally well.
You should follow this method for every Surah of the Qur’an. Keep at it and you will improve over time. Just like with anything else, the more effort you put in, the better you will become. Also, it’s important not to overexert yourself by memorizing too much at once. Try not to exceed memorizing more than one-eighth of a chapter per day.
Conclusion
This memorization method takes longer, but once you’ve used it, you won’t need to review it separately. You can apply this method to any Surah of the Quran and observe its effectiveness. The Madinah Quran Memorization Method is widely respected for its balance of memorization, understanding, and consistent revision, making it effective for long-term retention of the Quran.
At Hifz Academy, teachers also use this memorization technique in their courses if the students are interested. You can experience how it works in a free trial class with one of our experienced huffaz tutors.
